Wangari Maathai: The Mother of Trees

The narration from the app. About two minutes.

Wangari Maathai grew up in the green, fertile highlands of Kenya. As a little girl, she loved playing near a magical fig tree and drinking from crystal-clear streams. She was incredibly smart and traveled far away to study biology, becoming the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree! But when she returned to Kenya, she was sad to see that many forests had been chopped down. The rivers were drying up, and families didn't have enough firewood or clean water.

Wangari knew exactly what to do. She started the 'Green Belt Movement' and taught thousands of women how to plant tiny seeds and grow them into strong, beautiful trees. At first, people thought one woman couldn't make a difference. But Wangari smiled and said, 'It's the little things citizens do. That's what will make the difference.' Together, the women planted over 50 million trees! The rivers flowed again, and the forests grew back. Because she brought peace by healing the earth, Wangari became the very first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

What movement did Wangari Maathai start to plant trees?
