How the work stays on your device

Recent iPhones and iPads can read text in photos, recognize speech, translate and even summarize without a connection. These apps use those built-in, on-device features instead of sending your data to a server.

Text in photos and PDFs: read by Apple's on-device text recognition.
Speech: recognized and spoken on the device.
Translation: offline, once a language is downloaded.
Summaries and rewriting: Apple's on-device language model, on Apple Intelligence devices.
Your files: stay in the app on your device.

Frequently asked questions

What does "on-device" mean?

The work happens on your iPhone or iPad: reading text from a photo, recognizing speech, translating or summarizing. Your pages, recordings and documents are not sent to a server to be processed.

Do these apps need the internet?

No, the main features work in Airplane Mode. Some features need a one-time download, for example a translation language.

Is Read Aloud For Me private?

Yes, the reading itself is. Text recognition and speech run on the device and your pages are never uploaded. The free version shows ads; Read Aloud For Me PRO has no ads.

When will Reading Coach, Private Transcriber and Private Clips be available?

They are in development now. We will add them to this page with an App Store link when they launch. No release date is set yet.

How much will they cost?

Prices are not set yet.

Which devices will they support?

iPhone and iPad. Summaries and rewriting use Apple's on-device language model, which needs an Apple Intelligence device (iPhone 15 Pro or later, or an M-series iPad); the other features work on older devices too.
